Choosing a Specialty Paper Manufacturer: What to Ask Beyond Machine Photos

A factory visit should include the equipment, but a purchasing decision needs more. How does the selected sample become an order specification? Which reference controls a repeat order? What happens when the printing process changes? Those questions are less photogenic, but much closer to delivery.

Describe the manufacturing configuration accurately

QiLi’s recorded air-knife coating configuration comprises four air knives, four wire rods and four independent air-flotation dryers. It also has three gravure coating/printing lines and downstream rewinding, slitting, laminating and sheeting. Four air knives should not be described as four independent production lines.

This establishes a specific coating and surface-processing base, not universal suitability for every application. The diagram shows recorded configuration only. It is not a factory photograph, floor plan or capacity certificate.

Ask how the paper is specified and reordered

Put colour reference, grade, surface, grammage, size, required sides and production process in the same brief. VANGLAM 40 supports the colour conversation, while the order needs a specific material and an agreed physical approval. A phone screenshot is not a complete acceptance standard.

Discuss first-off approval, batch records, process checks and exception handling during qualification. When a report is required, match it to the exact grade and test conditions. A statement in marketing material does not replace the corresponding evidence.

Put the commercial and custom conditions up front

Provide end use, format, quantity, colour, surface, process and timing in an enquiry. For custom colours or textures, separate existing samples from development work. LAB is a development route, not an assurance of immediate stock.

The useful impression is not simply that QiLi owns machines. It is that the material and production questions can be discussed specifically, unknowns remain visible, and a promising sheet can be developed into a clear purchasing specification. That is more useful than a general assurance that everything will be fine.
