Choosing Specialty Paper: Start with the Packaging Brief

Choose specialty paper by packaging component, material family, printing method and finishing requirements before confirming a grade and quotation.

Choosing Specialty Paper: Start with the Packaging Brief

“Use a textured premium paper” describes an intention, not a purchasing specification. A designer may be thinking about colour, a brand team about the complete presentation, and a converter about printing and assembly. Start by putting those requirements together, before adding more swatches to the table.

Identify the component first

A sheet wrapped around a rigid box is not doing the same job as a board folded into a carton. An information card has a different job again. Specify the component, its dimensions and its intended use before comparing grammage.

For a coordinated set, list the box, insert, sleeve, carrier bag, hangtag and enclosed card separately. Colour can connect the set without forcing every component to use the same grade or construction.

Use the material families to narrow the search

Within VANGLAM, ESSENTIALS separates MONO white and black uncoated papers, PALETTE coloured uncoated papers and IMPRINT white coated printing papers. HALO white pearlescent and CHROMA coloured pearlescent papers belong to EFFECTS. SOFTSKIN and GRAINFORM address soft touch and texture respectively.

EARTH groups natural and environmental material directions; individual claims still need documentation. PERFORMANCE is a route for filtering documented properties, while LAB is a custom-development service. This structure helps organise a discussion. It does not promise that every possible combination is stocked.

Finish with a grade and a usable quotation

For example, Mineral Green can lead a box concept while Almond Taupe is considered for the accompanying card. Approve the paper grade for each part separately. A screen palette establishes a direction; it cannot approve the physical finish.

A useful enquiry includes quantity, sheet or finished size, required sides, printing process, finishing and the date the material is needed. Mark unresolved items for trial rather than filling the gaps with guessed specifications. That gives the printer and paper supplier a brief they can actually work with.
